Anyone who has ever tried to write trivia questions for an actual audience discovers fairly quickly that it's harder than it looks. Knowing a fact is not the same skill as turning that fact into a fair, engaging multiple-choice question, and the gap between "true statement" and "good trivia question" is where most of the real design work happens.
Start with what makes a question fail
The fastest way to understand good trivia design is to look at how questions break. A question fails when it's ambiguous — more than one answer choice could reasonably be argued as correct depending on interpretation. It fails when it's a pure guess, where none of the choices give a knowledgeable player any real edge over a random pick. And it fails when the wrong answers, known as distractors, are either so implausible nobody would pick them or so close to correct that even people who know the subject get tripped up on a technicality rather than a genuine gap in knowledge.
Almost every well-regarded trivia question is, underneath, a solution to these three failure modes at once: one clearly correct answer, several plausible-but-wrong alternatives, and no room for a "well, technically" dispute after the reveal.
The art of the distractor
Wrong answers do more work in a multiple-choice question than the correct one does. A strong distractor needs to be tempting to someone who has partial knowledge but wrong to anyone who actually knows the answer. This is a much narrower target than it sounds. Distractors that are too far from the truth get eliminated instantly and stop functioning as options at all, effectively turning the question into a coin flip between two choices instead of four. Distractors that are too close to correct start creating the ambiguity problem, where a technically defensible case exists for more than one answer.
The best distractors usually come from real, common misconceptions rather than random alternatives. If a question asks which country has the largest population by land area versus by population, using the other country as a distractor is far more interesting than using an unrelated country, because it tests whether the player actually knows the distinction rather than just recognizing a name. This is also why writing good distractors often takes longer than finding the correct answer in the first place — it requires anticipating exactly how someone might reasonably get the question wrong.
Calibrating difficulty on purpose
Difficulty in trivia isn't really about obscurity, even though that's the intuitive way to think about it. A question about an extremely obscure fact can still be "easy" if the answer choices make the correct one obvious through elimination, and a question about a widely known topic can be genuinely hard if it's phrased to test a specific, easily confused detail.
A more useful way to think about difficulty is in terms of how many people in a general audience would know the answer outright versus have to reason toward it versus have to guess blind. Easy questions should be answerable from memory by most people in the room. Medium questions should be answerable by combining partial memory with elimination. Hard questions can legitimately stump most of the room, but should still reward the specific kind of knowledge they're testing rather than just being trivia for trivia's sake.

Fairness is a design constraint, not an accident
A question can be factually accurate and still be unfair, and this distinction trips up a lot of first-time trivia writers. A question is unfair when its correct answer depends on a detail that wasn't implied by how the question was phrased, or when cultural or regional assumptions are baked in without the question signaling that. Good trivia writing treats this kind of hidden ambiguity as a bug to be caught before the question ever reaches a player, not an interesting wrinkle to be debated after the fact. The test isn't "is this technically true," it's "would a reasonable, knowledgeable person answer this the way I intended, given only what the question actually says."
Category and phrasing matter as much as content
The same underlying fact can be phrased as a strong question or a weak one. A weak phrasing states most of the answer within the question itself, leaving nothing to actually recall. A strong phrasing gives just enough context to be answerable without accidentally revealing the answer through word choice. This is a surprisingly common mistake: a question that mentions a distinctive detail closely associated with only one of the answer choices effectively hands the answer to anyone paying attention, regardless of whether they actually knew the fact beforehand.
Category framing matters too. The same fact can sit comfortably in "science" or "history" or "pop culture" depending on which angle the question emphasizes, and picking the right frame affects who in the room feels invited to guess. A well-rounded trivia set deliberately varies not just topics but the kind of thinking each question rewards — pure recall, logical elimination, pattern recognition, cultural familiarity — so that no single type of knowledge dominates the whole session.
Why this craft is invisible when done well
The strange thing about good trivia question design is that success looks like nothing at all. Nobody remarks on a fair, well-calibrated, unambiguous question — they just answer it, get the result they expected based on how confident they felt, and move on to the next one. It's only when a question fails one of these tests that anyone notices the design underneath it, usually in the form of an argument about whether the "correct" answer was actually correct. That asymmetry, invisible when it works and glaringly obvious when it doesn't, is exactly why the craft deserves more credit than it usually gets.
